Cold War Concerns:

The United States was concerned that they were falling behind the Soviet Union when they launched Sputnik during the Cold War. As a result, they created the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA).

J.C.R Licklider:

A scientist at ARPA who proposed the first "network” of computers that could talk to one another. Such a network would enable government leaders to communicate even if the Soviets destroyed the telephone system.

ARPANET:

The first network created that allowed computers to send data to one another.

ALOHANet:

Hawaii joins ARPAnet and represents the growing network of computers across the world.

TCP:

Vince Cerf establishes TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), which establishes the rules that allow any computers to communicate with one another.

World Wide Web:

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)build a system that allows scientists to share information. It includes the creation of an early HTML and the TCP procotol developed by Vince Cerf.
